From Fantasy to Reality

Written by Kendall Bergman

Throughout my life, I never really considered myself much of a dreamer. A lot of my life I’ve played it safe and was quite comfortable maintaining a status quo existence. While managing risk allows for a certain predictability and comfortability, it also squelches growth and transformation.

Looking back I can honestly say that, in highsight, I used to be a dreamer. I wanted more. I longed for meaning.

I dreamt of working in fashion and living in New York…getting my hands on textiles and materials…playing with color and textures…working with designers in out of the way places. I dreamt of moving to England and living in a cottage by the sea…maybe marrying a vicar, having a couple of kids and working in a garden. I dreamt of falling in love and experiencing an epic romance. None of that ever happened.

It’s quite possible those dreams never came about because I was too afraid to step outside of my comfort zone. Or, maybe the timing was always off. Or, maybe, still those dreams came true for someone else. Or, maybe I was fantasizing in order to avoid really dreaming. Or, maybe it was all of that and more.

Time passes, dreams fade away and life happens. I was afraid to take a chance. My confidence was broken. I was most comfortable playing it safe and being…well, comfortable.

Everything changed in 2002. I lost my job and ended up leaving my hometown (Dallas, TX) for Seattle, WA to attend seminary. Seattle isn’t New York. Seminary is definitely not the fashion industry. I didn’t have any children and I’ve not married…not yet, at least.

But I was in a new place where new stories would be created, new adventures would be experienced and new dreams would be realized.

Since 2020 I’ve learned to dream anew…with intention, consideration, prayer and meaning. I left a successful career in the cancer non-profit space and launched The Discovery Well. I work with incredible people who are birthing dreams of their own. I’m humbled, encouraged and inspired on a daily basis. Dreaming matters. Dreaming transforms. Dreaming drives us into action.

Are you ready to lay your fantasies to rest and bring your dreams to life? I’d love to walk with you as you determine what’s next for you. Feel free to reach out to me at kendall@thediscoverywell.com to schedule a free discovery session today!
